Mel is originally from Belize, and has moved to TCi from New York City with his wife and young daughter. The RCOP hosted DG Errol Alberga and his wife Leonie from August as part of the annual trip to the Turks and Caicos that the leader of District 7020 makes. He visited both our club and Grand Turk (where he helped charter a new Rotaract Club!), and promoted the 2010 District Conference in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica. Tom Lighbourne passed away today after battling a long illness. Tom was a past District Governor ( ) for District 7020, a two-time President of the Rotary Club of Providenciales, and a charter member of that Club. He touched many lives in the Turks & Caicos Community, within District 7020, and throughout the Rotary world. He remained active as a leader of District 7070 up until his death. Three cheers for ADG Karen for organizing yet another flawless visit by the DG of District 7020! She kept the DG and husband entertained and informed for almost a week and really helped them see the strength of Rotary throughout our islands and in the communities we serve.
The Rotary Club of Providenciales hosted a team of visiting professionals from St. Augustine, Florida this past week as part of Rotary International’s Group Study Exchange program. Members of the visiting 3-person team were hosted for a week at local Rotarians’ homes and treated to a full schedule of events, presentations, vocational shadowing, dinners and social activities. If a problem is encountered, it is always best to speak to the person or people directly related to/affected by the issue. Concerns/complaints can be expressed to any member of the staff by the Resident or family. An independent advocate could be asked to make a complaint on the Resident’s behalf. It is important to provide a thorough summary of the facts including relevant dates and times. The Complaint Management Process offers Residents and families a way to express their concerns regarding a PCH or the long-term care system. While it is important to express feelings, it is important to stay focused on the facts so that the concern will have a successful resolution and the situation improves. July 5, 2009 – The Rotary Club of Providenciales this week handed over a specially equipped passenger van which it is donating to provide transportation to senior citizens of Middle Caicos. The donation is its way of saying thank you to those citizens for their guidance and leadership over the years and their kindness and generosity of spirit. A hand over ceremony was held today at the Middle Caicos Community Center, with a BBQ lunch and blessing by Pastor Campbell. The RCOP enjoyed a day of fun, relaxation and competition at the mini golf course on September 19. A great turnout and an intense match ended with a team consisting of mother-daughter combos – Thashena and her daughter, Toni and her daughter – plus Rotarian of the Year Joy, winning top prizes. Outgoing president Mike Sottak and Family of Rotary Chair Micky Shoulak presented the award to Tom’s family, including son Elery, daughter Dione and wife Thelma. Tom Lightbourne, who passed away this spring after a long battle with cancer, was honored posthumously by the Rotary Club of Providenciales as its Rotarian of the Year at the club’s annual Changeover Night ceremony held last Saturday. Past President and Past District Governor Tom was remembered as a guiding force in Rotary in Turks and Caicos and throughout the Rotary world. In what is becoming an annual tradition, the RCOP conducted a dictionary handout at local elementary schools – including North and Middle Caicos. Rotarians were met with warm welcomes by students and teachers alike at all the schools and there was genuine appreciation for Rotary’s efforts in helping improve literacy and giving a helping hand to the local schools. The RCOP hosted the annual DG visit this past week, welcoming DG Diana White and husband Roger to our club and island. On Thursday August 4, our weekly Club meetings moves back to its old time at 7.00pm and has a new home at Windsong Resort located in The Bight. The Rotary Pot O Gold is an major annual fund raiser for the Club and the draw occurs at the annual Conch Festival held in Blue Hills, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands. 1999 tickets are printed in an effort to raise a total of $20,000. $10,000 is allocated for the grand prize and the balance is used for community projects by the Club. This year, the Club’s raffle raised $16,630.00 and it was the first time consolation prizes were offered. The children from the Preschool “Odd E. Hanssen” visit the Interactive Museum of Science in Quito, thanks to the support from a Norwegian sponsor. VP Raymond Cushnie accepted the club banner for the Rotary Club of New York from Kaan Soyak, who is a co-chair of their International Service Division. Kaan was disappointed that he didn’t arrange his itinerary to include our weekly meeting, but looks forward to correcting that on the next visit, perhaps as soon as May or June. We would like to especially thank all the Morley House staff who provided excellent care to mom and she always spoke so highly of them all. Through a community needs assessment, the Club initially envisioned providing some means of assistance to senior citizens to allow them to remain in their neighbourhoods for a longer period, at a reasonable cost. That concept later expanded to include provision of assistance to other citizens in the community in need of affordable housing. This new vision, coupled with the desire to support the revitalization of downtown Charlottetown, culminated in the Kiwanis Club’s Affordable Housing Project. Socito Del la Cruz covered all his spots in the jackpot game with just 53 balls, and took home a whopping $28,000. Close to 1,000 players jammed the Tropicana for their chance to win the big money, and even the preliminary games awarded record-level prizes. The real winner is Rotary of course as we will use the proceeds we earn as part of the Bingo fundraiser to support projects here in TCI and around the world. With the dramatic need for aid in Haiti, we will undoubtedly be able to use the extra revenue generated by this round of Bingo. The Rotary Club of Providenciales, in conjunction with the Rotary Community Corps of North and Middle Caicos, recently completed an eye testing program for children attending elementary schools on North and Middle Caicos. The clubs worked with the gracious support of Dr Julian Petrucci of Menzies Optometry who conducted eye tests for 53 students and identified 11 that are in need of prescriptive glasses to see clearly. The Rotary Clubs will provide the glasses at no charge to those in need. The program builds on a similar program conducted by Rotary each year in Providenciales. The Health Care Directive you make is binding on your proxy, your friends, relatives and health care professionals and will be honored by the courts. It is important that if you have made a Health Care Directive a copy of it is provided to the Personal Care Home when you are admitted so that the health care staff will be able to abide by your wishes and plan your care accordingly. August 28 will be the annual summer party for the department. December 4th will be the annual Christmas dinner at the Miscouche Legion. The monument was delivered today and has been covered with a tarp till September 18th. Jason wanted to know if the community would be interested in doing a proclamation for September 18 to be a recognized day for fallen fire fighters for Miscouche, St Nicholas and the fire district of Miscouche. This would mean that on that day the flags will be at half mast and the wreaths will be placed. The department received a letter from the PEIFF Association advising that they are encouraging them to pay for the 2020 year, and if not then they will like to see the department back in 2022. The department would like to thank the council for nominating them for the Covid Warrior Coin. All the harassment forms have been completed and passed into the office. John added that the department had 4 calls last month and that the fire extinguisher were coming due for inspection. Michelle advised him that this task was completed yesterday. Residents enjoy predominantly private rooms, and each wing has a central area for dining and activities. Regular social events are planned, including outings, exercise groups, one to one activities, bingo and many more, according to the desires of the residents.

The Kiwanis Club of Charlottetown sold the Abe Zakem House to the Canadian Mental Health Assocication and still meeting the needs of Islanders today. Named in honor of our longest serving member, the Abe Zakem House is a 22-unit affordable housing project located on Water Street in Charlottetown. This project was the first multi-unit residential rental project to be developed under the Canada-Prince Edward Island Affordable Housing Agreement signed in May 2004. Mom was born on August 19, 1929, at Elk Ranch, Manitoba; the first of seven children born to Alex and Helen Rainkie. She married her life partner John Pasowisty on May 25, 1947, in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church at Mountain Road, Manitoba and together, they raised nine children on their farm at Elk Ranch, Manitoba. For over 60 years, the Long Term & Continuing Care Association of Manitoba —a non-profit, membership-based organization—has been a valued adviser and partner in the promotion of safe care and living options for seniors living in Manitoba. Persons of all ages may unexpectedly be in a position where they cannot speak for themselves to make decisions about proposed treatments. This could happen as a result of an accident or severe illness. It also happens quite gradually, as a rule, with victims of a dementia disease such as Alzheimer. In the event that you become incapable of making decisions about your finances during your stay in a Personal Care Home, the person you named as your attorney will have the ability to make decisions about your financial affairs. It is important that you make the Personal Care Home aware of this at the time of admission and provide them a copy of the Enduring Power of Attorney that names your attorney so that they may contact them should the need arise. In law, the authority under a Power of Attorney ENDS if the donor becomes mentally incompetent and incapable of managing his or her own financial affairs. However, the donor may include a clause in the Power of Attorney document allowing the attorney you have appointed to continue acting even if the donor later becomes mentally incompetent. If this clause is included in the power of attorney, the document is referred to as an Enduring Power of Attorney. All Personal Care Homes have regular inspections by their local fire department. Each Personal Care Home holds regular fire drills for the staff to keep them knowledgeable in the procedures to carry out if there were ever a fire. Personal Care Home Standards also govern the strict controls that must be in place. Personal Care Homes have a policy about restraints of both types. No-one is ‘tied up’ unless there is a threat to either their own or someone else’s safety. Every other means is tried before a restraint is ordered and then it will be the least restraint possible to assure the safety of the resident. The trauma to the resident of being ‘tied-up’ must be weighed against the risk to their safety before a restraint will be ordered. You or your designated representative must agree that a restraint can be used. As well, the type of restraint and the frequency of monitoring the resident with a restraint must be ordered by either a physician or a nurse. The use of drugs as a restraint is carefully monitored as well as the use of any physical restraint. You can bring in alcohol but use of it will be controlled by the nursing staff. All Homes have a toilet and sink in the resident suite with bathing facilities for all the residents in a central location. All Homes have access to a Registered Dietitian who will make sure that any of your special dietary needs i.e. diabetic diet, are taken care of. Food preferences will be taken into consideration but cannot be guaranteed. The Laundry Department in each of the Homes will take care of both linens and personal clothing.

JARVIE, Robert Howard Jarvie passed away on November 11, 2021 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Brandon, at the age of 83, after a lengthy illness. Robert was predeceased by his parents Robert Sr. and Marion; brothers Edward, Jim, and Harold; and sister-in-law Olive. Left to mourn his passing are, sister-in-law Angela, Alonsa; brothers Walter , McCreary, Donald , Alonsa; daughter Laurie and grandchildren Cassie and Brady, Calgary, AB; and life long friends Gordon and Helen Stevenson, Brandon. Bob grew up on the family farm north of Alonsa where he attained his education by correspondence with the supervision of his mother. He worked around Manitoba usually on farms and a few years driving a mail delivery van east of Brandon. After a debilitating stroke in 2011, he has been confined to living at Rideau Park PCH and while he enjoyed and appreciated the carding staff there, he never gave up wanting to get outside and go for a drive in the country. He loved to visit family and friends, and wanted only to be loved in return. He was devastated when his wife and family left and he was not permitted to spend time with his daughter and grandchildren. He loved to dance, and played harmonica, accordion, and organ, all learned by ear. Bob returned regularly to visit the family farm and liked to remember it the way it used to be. He was not happy when he learned the wind had blown down the big elm tree that he had used to sit up in to watch the water foul and animals on the lake. At the PCH he enjoyed the musical entertainment, bingo and card games. He gathered thousands of can tabs and solved many jigsaw puzzles, mostly of John Deere tractors and wildlife. Graveside memorial was at Grey’s Ridge Cemetery, Alonsa with Rev. Gordon Stevenson officiating. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and would be greatly appreciated. Where there is no one willing or able to be the private committee, the Chief Provincial Psychiatrist may appoint the Public Trustee of Manitoba to act in this capacity. In such a case the Public Trustee is responsible for making decisions affecting your personal and financial interests. Charges for this service will be made by the Public Trustee office and will ordinarily be charged to your estate. Ruth faced many challenges in her life due to her physical and cognitive disabilities. But with strong support from her family, inherited strength from her mother, and education through R.B. Russell Vocational School, she had a career as a dietary aide at the Riverview Health Centre spanning 31 years. She maintained the friendships she developed at school, especially with Laura Johnston and Marilyn Rye. She was very proud of her job and continued on with the Volunteer Department there after retirement. Travelling the world with her parents, Ethel and Alf, on annual winter cruises and “beaching it” at Grand Marais were her mainstays during her working life. Ruth was a fixture at Park Alleys Bowling where she and her parents were members of the Thursday evening five pin association. Any family gatherings that showcased the musical talents of the Browns were another delight. Bingo at the Legion and Happy Hour and Game Nights at Villa Cabrini (where she lived on her own for eight years!) became her pastime in retirement.

Concerns and suggestions of an overall nature of the programs offered or the running of the Home can be expressed at a ‘Resident Council’ meeting. Each Home has a Resident Council that meets, usually monthly, to assist residents in this way and to seek their input into the kind of programs they want to be offered. If you are totally unhappy with the Home, you can ask for a transfer to another Home. The transfer can be arranged but you must apply for it with the Home where you are and indicate which new Home you wish to go to. Most Homes have a pastoral care program that offers church services weekly. The services are usually conducted by the local pastoral care organization and are of different denominations. Yes, you can keep your own physician if they have admitting privileges to the Personal Care Home in which you reside. Each Care Home has a medical director who is in charge of the overall medical care provided to the residents. Each resident must have their own physician who will look after their medical care. If your own physician does not have admitting privileges to the care home in which you reside a physician from the staff in the home will be provided for you. All residents of Personal Care Homes in Manitoba are subject to individualized rent charges that are put in place by Manitoba Health each year. The amount of the rent is determined by an assessment of the annual income of each resident. The basic daily charge is re-evaluated by Manitoba Health annually in August. Wanda Lennox, Activities Coordinator for Riverdale PCH, indicated how happy and proud everyone was for this special recognition day to honour Phyllis for all of her achievements. Phyllis Eastcott was born in 1922 in Fisherton , Manitoba, the middle child of a family of 13 children. Out of 13 children, Phyllis was one of five to serve in the 2nd World War. Her four brothers, Gerald, Bill, Henry and Charlie all served, with her brothers serving overseas.
